My Morning Routine
⇾ Josef Adamu,
BEVEL’s Creative Director
How the creative director gets ready and the products he swears by
Creative direction is one of those jobs that can be difficult to define but instantly recognizable when it's done well. It's all about shaping how a brand looks, feels and connects with people. Josef Adamu has spent his career doing exactly that. After founding the multidisciplinary creative agency Sunday School, the stylish Toronto-born, New York-based storyteller has collaborated with everyone from Nike and Converse to Spotify. Today, as creative director of BEVEL, he's helping guide one of men's grooming's most influential brands into its next chapter through thoughtful design, sharp visuals and authentic storytelling.
“It's been incredibly rewarding to help shape a brand that champions Black men's grooming with intention, and authenticity,” he tells me. “I've had the privilege of leading our brand identity while creating work that resonates deeply because I'm part of the community we're serving.” And his impeccable eye for detail doesn't clock out when the cameras do. Adamu has built his reputation on noticing things—how a room feels, who's missing from a narrative, what a haircut can mean to the person getting it—and that same attentiveness shapes the hours before he ever walks into a shoot. We wanted to know how a man who spends his days directing other people's best angles gets his own morning in order, and he agreed to share his routine.
The Series
Those moments between turning off the alarm and getting into our work routine can be the most defining 60 minutes of our day. Benjamin Franklin set a day's worth of plans by 5 am and Steve Jobs asked a simple question: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" Our rituals are a reflection of us. So we've ventured out to discover how some of our most influential and fruitful peers get started.
My Routine
I’ve always been a morning person.
I grew up playing sports and many of my practices in school started early in the morning. I think that discipline has stayed with me, which is why I rarely sleep past 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. Most days, I'm up by 6:30 or 7 a.m., and I find that's the best time to get ahead, be productive, before the rest of the day begins.
I try to be consistent with sleep.
But, it really varies as some days I have a heavy workload and find myself exhausted by 10 p.m., while other nights I'm up late watching basketball, or a TV show that has my attention, which can keep me awake until like two in the morning.
Personally, I’ve never really depended on alarms.
Unless I have to wake up abnormally early for a flight, which can be common in my line of work. Thankfully, my body does a fairly good job keeping up with my sleeping pattern on a daily basis.
There’s not much on my night stand.
It's really basic—no creative direction there. Currently, it's just some jewelry, my prescription glasses, a remote and my phone.
I wish I made my bed everyday.
It really depends on my energy in the morning. When I'm feeling optimistic and I've got some time before heading out, I definitely do. But, there are also instances where I roll out of bed and regret it later in the day. Unfortunately, this happens often.
When I pick up my phone ...
I check my texts first. I often wake up to a few missed messages from friends or family because I didn't finish conversations before unexpectedly falling asleep. On especially demanding days, I slip straight into exhaustion mode the moment I close my laptop.
The first person I talk to ...
My girlfriend or my mother. The two who immediately have my best interest at the top of the morning.
Pray, gym, hydrate.
This I do every morning, without fail. I tend to split up my workouts based on muscle regions. I'll do back and biceps on Monday, legs on Tuesday, chest and triceps on Wednesday, etc. The strict pattern in my schedule provides more clarity and focus for me.
Going to the gym is probably my top priority before starting my day.
I've never been the type to put a workout off until later in the day, as I believe it provides the kickstart I need in the early morning. Going to the gym is almost like a promise I make to myself before the sun comes up.
I’m not a big coffee drinker.
But what I do drink quite often are Celsius Live Fit drinks. It really does set me up for a successful day which usually begins with the gym and a virtual kick-off meeting with my team at work.
To mentally prepare for the day ...
I like making lists. Usually, I have a ton going on, and a tendency to be forgetful when I'm overwhelmed. So, I typically create lists or set reminders in my phone and actively cross those tasks out throughout the day.
I get my most important tasks done early.
Once I sit down, get settled in a chair, and open my laptop, anything goes. I tend to move quickly through emails and Slack threads so I can stay ahead of things and minimize the need to circle back later. Transitioning from a full-time freelance creative to a corporate Creative Director has brought a greater sense of structure and accountability to my routine. I have meetings to lead, presentations to prepare, and responsibilities that require me to show up even on days when I may not feel like it. That level of consistency has sharpened my discipline and made structure a much more important part of how I approach each day.
My grooming routine is serious, but actually quite simple.
In my role, I've had the opportunity to test many of our regimens firsthand, so I regularly use my favorites. I've learned a lot about usage frequency and regimen maintenance when it comes to BEVEL's products and benefits.
If I have an important day ahead, I’ll usually plan my outfit the night before.
Generally speaking, though, I'm pretty good at putting together an outfit based on how I feel just before heading out the door. My personal style is fairly consistent, so most of my wardrobe works regardless of the mood I'm in that day.

My hoop earrings. I’ve had this gold pair for so long that I don’t want to remember my face prior to it. It complements me really well and feels subtle enough to not be very noticeable.
