Todd snyder nomad derby 1

Todd Snyder Nomad derby

Todd Snyder makes a convincing case for swapping out your usual loafers with this handsome tobacco-colored pair of derbies. The warm, earthy shade feels especially right for fall, while the straightforward lace-up silhouette strikes a nice balance between dressed-up and casual. Wear them with relaxed wool trousers and a chunky sweater or let them add some polish to your favorite faded jeans. They’re the sort of shoes that make an outfit feel a little more intentional without making you look like you’re headed to a job interview.

Birkenstock 1774 uerzell 1

Birkenstock 1774 Uerzell shoe

Birks are getting downright architectural. Part of the brand’s elevated 1774 line, this collaboration with designer Thibo Denis takes the comfort-first philosophy of Birkenstock into considerably more experimental territory. The Uerzell has a sculptural, almost futuristic silhouette that feels somewhere between a traditional leather shoe and a piece of industrial design. There’s still a practical, everyday sensibility beneath the unusual proportions, which is what makes the whole thing work. Pair them with wide-leg trousers, a boxy jacket or some generously cut denim. They might not be for everyone, but sometimes the most interesting shoes are the ones that don’t fit neatly into any category.

Diemme rayon vert grappa hiker 1

Diemme + Rayon Vert Grappa hiker

Italian footwear specialist Diemme teams up with outdoor-minded label Rayon Vert to give its Grappa Hiker a decidedly unexpected makeover. The low-top silhouette combines handsome houndstooth wool tweed with suede trim, reinforced rubber panels and chunky Vibram soles. Drawcord laces add a technical touch, but it’s the contrasting textures that make these particularly interesting. Wear them with wool trousers and a fleece jacket or lean into the outdoorsy aesthetic with fatigues and a chunky sweater. They’re rugged enough to handle a trail, but almost too good-looking to get muddy.

Clarks cleyhill top boot 1

Clarks Cleyhill Top boot

You might call these the Wallabee’s rugged younger brother. Clarks borrows the familiar moc-toe shape of its iconic Wallabee and gives it a substantial upgrade with the Cleyhill Top. The dark brown leather upper keeps things classic, while an oversized EXTRALIGHT outsole adds some welcome attitude without weighing you down. There’s also a cushioned footbed for all-day comfort, making these an appealing alternative to heavier fall boots. Wear them with wide-leg cords, washed denim or some roomy fatigue pants. They’re familiar enough to feel like an old favorite, but the exaggerated sole gives them a distinctly modern edge.

Satisfy rocker trail sneaker 1

Satisfy Rocker trail sneaker

Paris-based Satisfy brings refreshes its cult running trail shoe in a new colorway for fall. A lightweight, breathable Rippy 66 monomesh upper sits above responsive Euforia superfoam cushioning, while a Vibram Megagrip outsole provides traction when the pavement ends. Designed for serious distances across changing terrain, it’s a legitimate performance shoe with an unmistakably fashion-forward silhouette. Wear them on your next trail run or with relaxed technical trousers around town. Either way, they’re proof that serious running gear can have serious style.
