There are two kinds of guys come summer: the ones who plan some preemptive body grooming maintenance and the ones who suddenly notice their shoulder hair halfway through putting on the first tank top of the season. No matter which camp you fall in, let this be your reminder that now’s the perfect time to take stock.

The good news is modern manscaping has become far less aggressive. Grooming experts and aestheticians now largely agree that the goal isn’t removing every inch of body hair. It’s really just about keeping things trimmed and hygienic once the forecast calls for exposing a little more skin.

We’re talking about strategic maintenance here: trimming, blending and cleaning up the places where hair tends to look unruly, trap sweat or peek out where you’d rather it didn’t. (And if you’re wondering which trimmer to buy, we already rounded up the best grooming tools for every job.) Here’s the modern guy’s guide to what’s actually worth grooming before beach season is in full swing. It’s not about some big transformation, but more like conscientious maintenance. After all, the best body grooming is usually the kind nobody notices directly.

Chest Hair

Trim, Don’t Erase It

Man chest hair trimmed illustrationThis is where most guys overdo it. Fully shaving your chest often creates more problems than it solves: stubble, ingrown hairs, irritation and the unfortunate sandpaper phase a few days later. Instead, experts recommend simply reducing bulk and keeping things controlled. A trimmed chest still looks natural—just more kempt. The move isn’t hairless. It’s maintained.

Best Practices

  • Use a guard instead of shaving bare
  • Trim with the grain to minimize irritation
  • Keep some natural density
  • Blend chest hair naturally into stomach hair, avoiding sharp lines or obvious borders

Back and Shoulders

Clean Up the Excess

If shoulder or upper-back hair is visibly creeping out of shirts, tanks or swimwear, it’s worth addressing. This is one of the few areas where even grooming minimalists tend to agree: cleaning up excessive back or shoulder hair instantly makes summer clothes look sharper. You don’t need a full “hairless torso”, you just want to look good in a tank top.

Best Practices

  • Focus on upper back and shoulders rather than removing everything
  • Use trimming instead of aggressive shaving when possible
  • Keep transitions natural-looking
  • If hair is especially thick, consider professional waxing every six to eight weeks

Armpits

The Most Underrated Grooming Move

Man armpit hair illustrationYou don’t need to completely shave your underarms. But trimming them down significantly can help with sweat, odor and deodorant performance during hotter months. Think of it as airflow optimization. It also simply looks cleaner.

Best Practices

  • Trim shorter rather than fully shaving
  • Hair should not peek out when your arms are by your side
  • Use a trimmer with a large guard or simply twist the hair and snip with scissors
  • Touch up more frequently as needed

Groin Grooming

Less Is More

This is the area where enthusiasm becomes dangerous. Most aestheticians will tell you to trim conservatively instead of going completely bare. Especially in the summertime. A close trim tends to look cleaner, requires far less maintenance and leads to less irritation. Overdoing it usually leads to razor burn and regret.

Best Practices

  • Trim dry hair first before showering
  • Pull skin taut while grooming
  • Don’t rush: Use slow, short strokes
  • Keep a little length to minimize ingrown hairs and itchiness
  • Focus primarily on visible areas around swimsuit lines

Stomach Hair and the Happy Trail

Blend Everything Together

This is were balance comes into play. Your stomach should visually connect to your chest (and your package). If one area is heavily trimmed and the other is untouched, things can start looking oddly disconnected. Consistency matters more than perfection here. And, the less obvious the grooming, the better the result tends to look.

Best Practices

  • Match stomach hair length to chest hair
  • Blend transitions naturally
  • Reduce density slightly instead of removing everything

Arms and Legs

Usually Leave Them Alone

Man leg hair illustrationUnless you’re especially hairy or you simply prefer a more groomed look, most experts agree arms and legs rarely need major maintenance. If you do decide to tidy things up, a subtle trimming is usually better than shaving.

Best Practices

  • Thin out dense hair instead of removing it entirely
  • Keep hair length even throughout using a guard on your trimmer
  • Use restraint: Focus on obvious overgrowth around shoulders or upper thighs

Feet and Toes

The Area Most Guys Forget

Nothing ruins a good pair of sandals faster than neglected feet. Summer means your feet are suddenly visible again, but that’s a privilege, not a right. Basic maintenance matters a lot more now than it does the rest of the year. You don’t need a full-on pedicure. You just don’t want “forgotten about entirely” feet.

Best Practices

  • Trim toenails short and straight across
  • Remove excessive or dark toe hair if it’s especially long or noticeable
  • Smooth rough heels with a pumice stone
  • Moisturize dry or cracked skin occasionally

Sweat the Small Stuff

When it comes to body hair, regular upkeep is what keeps a guy looking well-groomed and handsome. Remember to trim nose and ear hair regularly, tidy overly wild eyebrows and clean up neck hair between haircuts.
