Washing is a simple daily chore. Splash some water, lather up, rinse and move on, right? But the cleanser you use can make a noticeable difference in how your skin looks and feels. Something too aggressive can leave your face tight and irritated, while the wrong formula might not do much for excess oil, breakouts or stubborn dry patches. Like most grooming products, the best face wash is the one that actually addresses what your skin needs.

So we put a range of cleansers to work on different skin types and concerns, looking at everything from how effectively they cleaned to how skin felt immediately afterward and over time. Some prioritize hydration, others gently exfoliate or help keep breakouts in check. There are formulas designed to calm redness and others that support a compromised skin barrier. Below, we’ve broken down our favorites by what they do best, so you can find the right wash for your face, not just the one with the nicest bottle.

Best Overall

There’s a reason this unassuming bottle has become such a standby. The French pharmacy brand’s creamy, fragrance-free cleanser is gentle enough for sensitive skin but still leaves your face feeling properly clean. Niacinamide, ceramides and glycerin help maintain moisture and support the skin barrier, making it particularly good for normal-to-dry skin. It doesn’t produce much lather, but that’s part of its appeal. Testers consistently praised the lack of that tight, stripped feeling after rinsing.

Testing Note

The lotion-like consistency takes a wash or two to get used to, but skin feels remarkably comfortable afterward. This is the cleanser we’d recommend to someone who simply wants a reliable everyday wash without overthinking it.

Onekind radical repair nourishing cream cleanser

Best Hydrating

Dry skin often feels even drier after washing. But this cleanser starts as a rich cream before working into a soft, silky lather, with hyaluronic acid and Pentavitin helping skin hold onto moisture. The result is clean skin that still feels supple rather than squeaky. The subtle minty, herbaceous scent makes the whole thing feel a little more luxurious, too.

Testing Note

This was the standout for that immediate post-rinse feel. Skin stays soft and comfortable, and the cream-to-lather texture feels more substantial than your typical hydrating cleanser without leaving behind a film.

Tower 28 sos gel facial cleanser

Best for Redness/Irritation

When your face is already angry, the last thing it needs is an aggressive cleanser. Tower 28’s SOS wash was formulated specifically with sensitive, reactive skin in mind. The fragrance-free, low-foaming gel uses aloe vera, oat extract and mineral-rich electrolytes to cleanse while helping calm irritation and redness. It’s also dermatologist- and ophthalmologist-tested and gentle enough to use around the eyes.

Testing Note

There’s no tingle, aggressive foam or squeaky-clean finish here. The gel rinses away easily and leaves reactive skin feeling calm and noticeably less tight.

Dermalogica daily microfoliant exfoliator 1

Daily Microfoliant exfoliator,

Dermalogica

Best for Exfoliating

Part cleanser, part exfoliator, Dermalogica’s cult favorite starts as a rice-based powder that transforms into a creamy paste when mixed with water. Papain, salicylic acid and rice bran tackle dead skin and clogged pores, while colloidal oatmeal and allantoin help keep the process from feeling overly aggressive. The payoff is almost immediate: smoother, softer skin with a little extra brightness. Okay, technically this isn’t a face wash, but we used it as a cleanser and found it worked surprisingly well.

Testing Note

Add more water for a creamier, gentler polish or less for a little more texture. Either way, don’t bear down. You can feel it working without scrubbing hard.

Jaxon lane boom cica wow barrier boost gel cleanser

Boom Cica Wow Barrier Boost gel cleanser,

$34
at
JAXON LANE

Best for Skin Barrier

If you’ve gone a little too hard on the retinol, acids or exfoliation, reach for this cleanser. Jaxon Lane builds its gel wash around centella asiatica (known in skincare circles as cica), along with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, chamomile, green tea and other soothing ingredients. The idea is to get rid of sweat, oil and buildup without further messing with an already stressed skin barrier.

Testing Note

Don’t expect mountains of foam. It produces a relatively restrained lather but rinses clean without that stripped sensation, which makes it especially nice when your skin is feeling dry, flaky or simply overworked.

Geologie acne wash 1

Geologie Acne wash,

$32.98
/
$14.99
at

Best for Breakouts

Breakouts call for something with a little more firepower. Geologie puts 2% salicylic acid (the maximum commonly used concentration in over-the-counter acne washes) to work dissolving excess oil and buildup inside pores while gently exfoliating the surface. That makes it particularly useful for oily skin, blackheads and guys prone to recurring blemishes. There’s a bergamot-and-juniper version, but we like that an unscented option is available, too.

Testing Note

You get the clean, degreased feeling you want from a blemish-busting wash without the sandblasted sensation of old-school acne cleansers. It can be less moisturizing than the gentler washes here, though, so follow with a lightweight moisturizer if your skin starts feeling dry.

Best Practices

Don’t overthink it.

Wash your face, ideally, twice a day. Once in the morning and again before bed. But if you’re only going to do it once, make it at night. That’s when you want to remove the day’s buildup of sweat, oil, sunscreen and general grime.

Give it 30 seconds.

Rather than quickly lathering and rinsing, dermatologists say you need about 30 seconds gently massaging your cleanser into your skin with your fingertips.

Keep the water lukewarm.

A steaming-hot rinse might feel satisfying, but hot water can strip away natural oils and leave skin feeling dry or irritated. Lukewarm or room-temperature water gets the job done without unnecessarily stressing your skin.

Pat, don’t rub.

Gently pat your face dry with a towel, leaving it slightly damp before following with moisturizer.
