Cargo pants have been pulled in so many directions over the years (from oversized and distressed to skinny to technical), that it’s easy to forget how good the original formula was. During World War II, the U.S. Army replaced its blue denim work uniforms with olive-drab garments cut from rugged cotton herringbone twill, better known as HBT. By late 1942, the trousers had evolved into a roomier, higher-rise design with oversized hip pockets, giving soldiers greater freedom of movement and someplace practical to stash gear. They were work pants in the most literal sense: tough, comfortable and designed without a wasted detail.

Maybe that’s why they still look so good today. The subtle zigzag texture of fabric gives the pants more character than ordinary chino cloth, while the big patch cargo pockets break up the silhouette without turning the pants into tactical cosplay. And unlike the trim cargos that dominated menswear not too long ago, these are supposed to have some volume. A relaxed seat, fuller thigh and straight leg are part of the appeal.

And while collectors are willing to pay top dollar (or dig through a military surplus bin), you don’t have to. Brands are revisiting the original HBT cargo with varying degrees of historical fidelity, from inexpensive interpretations that simply nail the silhouette to painstaking reproductions built almost exactly like the wartime originals. Pair them with a heavyweight tee and canvas sneakers, an oxford and loafers or a denim jacket and boots. We compared a few versions to find out what you get at each price point.

Good

The Sub-$100 Pair

Pros

  • Cut from a 100% cotton fabric. It’s not thin, but it’s not as substantial as the others.
  • The fit is relaxed through the leg, which gets much closer to the proportions of vintage military trousers than a tapered modern cargo
  • A washed treatment softens the khaki fabric and gives the pants some broken-in character right from the start
  • Classic zip fly and standard buttons keep things straightforward and modern

Cons

  • They capture the look more than any authentic details. If you’re after vintage-inspired hardware, period-correct construction or truly heavyweight HBT, you’ll need to move up.

Better

The Upgrade Pair

Pros

  • Cut from custom fabric inspired by the herringbone twill (or HBT) of vintage uniforms that feels structured-yet-lived-in right from the first wear
  • This interpretation cleans up the vintage silhouette enough to work with everyday basics while preserving the utility-pant look
  • Gusseted pockets supply the visual heft you want, but they’ve added front curved pockets and back welt pockets, too
  • Finished with a button fly and vintage-inspired buttons

Cons

  • Some reviewers felt the pockets were a tad small and that the belt loops felt a little flimsy for such a rugged pair of pants

Best

The 100% Accurate Pair

Pros

  • Cut from the same type of cotton herringbone twill that was used for U.S. military field uniforms during WWII
  • Made in Japan and finished with oxidized “Economy Riveted Buttons,” which replicate a civilian-style button found on original examples when standard USMC hardware was unavailable
  • Oversized cargo pockets sit at both the sides and rear—the side pockets were originally sized to hold K-ration boxes, while the enormous rear pocket could accommodate a camouflage poncho
  • Finished with a high waist and button fly

Cons

  • Authenticity comes with baggage—literally. These are unapologetically voluminous, with enormous pockets and a higher rise than most. And then there’s the investment-level price.
