Fatigue pants might be the easiest military-inspired piece to work into a modern wardrobe. But first, a quick history lesson on one of menswear’s toughest pairs of trousers. First issued to American soldiers in the early 1950s, the OG-107—short for Olive Green 107—was developed as part of the Army Uniform Board’s effort to create a uniform that was lightweight and comfortable enough for everyday wear, but durable enough to withstand the rigors of the battlefield. The result was so successful that the style remained in service for decades, eventually giving way to cargo-style uniforms in the 1980s.
Even after being decommissioned, fatigue pants never really went away. Veterans kept wearing them and younger generations discovered inexpensive originals hanging in surplus stores. It’s easy to understand why. The function-first design is about as straightforward as it gets: two oversized patch pockets up front, two button-flap patch pockets in back and reinforced stitching throughout. They’re essentially the badass cousin of your favorite chinos—just as versatile, but with considerably more character. Wear them with a beefy tee, denim shirt, oxford or knit polo and nearly any shoe in your closet.
The best modern versions preserve the utilitarian DNA while refining the fit, fabric and construction just enough. You want some room through the leg, a little structure in the cloth and pockets that add visual interest without making you look like you’re heading out on maneuvers. Better still, fatigue pants improve with wear: cotton softens, olive fades and the whole thing gets more personal the longer you own them. We tried on a range of pairs, from straightforward workwear versions to decidedly more elevated interpretations, to find the best at every price point.
