Go Long With Your Coat This Winter
The best overcoats are long, layerable and incredibly versatile
Winter is just getting started, which means now is the ideal time to rethink your outerwear choices. Sure, a puffer or parka will always be reliable, insulated options. But a proper overcoat feels incredibly stylish this season. The coolest guys are pulling on woolen styles that have a rakish, throwback vibe to them.
Big and boxy, some have raglan sleeves, others have belts or wide, double-breasted lapels. In any case, they all have plenty of room inside to accommodate a few layers. They come in a variety of lengths—from knee-grazing to nearly floor length—as well as weights. But almost all are cut from substantial wool that's at once breathable yet incredibly warm. And whether you're stepping out in a suit or simply throwing the coat over a hoodie and some jeans, this is a coat that ensures you look put together and stand a little taller. What's more, you can get really good options at any price point. Which means there's a long, louche overcoat out there waiting for you right now. And we're here to help you find it.

Avoid Salt Stains
The only downside to longer coats is the risk of salt stains from sidewalks. According to Arthur Anton, Jr. of Boston’s famed Anton’s Cleaners, the best way to get salt stains off of clothing is to treat it as soon as possible with warm water and a little white vinegar. Blot the area until the stain is removed. If the salt has already dried, you can also try brushing it off with a soft brush and then blotting.
