A Cool Twist

The best Johnny collar
polos for summer
What do you get when you take a great polo shirt and remove the buttons from the placket? This is not the setup for a Dad joke. Rather, it's the formula for a stylistic shift on a reliable staple of menswear. The buttonless polo shirt—otherwise known as a Johnny collar—toes the line between eras. It manages to feel extremely fresh and modern while recalling both a mid-century American clubhouse aesthetic and an early '90s European vibe.
It's breezy and relaxed while retaining a certain rakish elegance. The Johnny collar polo can be layered under a jacket for a dressed-up look, but it can just as easily be thrown on with some washed chinos or wide-leg shorts. The come in a variety of colors and fabrications, from luxe silk and breathable linen to cotton that has been knitted and crocheted for a soft, textural look and feel. To help you make your decision, the Valet. team rounded up their favorites in a range of styles and price points. Take your pick.

How to Wash
Your Knit Polo
Depending on how and where you wear these shirts (with or without an undershirt), they should be laundered every two to three wearings. And the more complicated the knit, the more likely you’ll want to hand wash it. The design team at Percival says to “make a morning of it” and put on a playlist or podcast that you like. “Mix warm water with mild liquid soap, and soak your knitwear in it for five minutes. Carefully rinse it, then squeeze out excess water, but in the name of all that is holy do not twist it. Then lay flat on a drying rack or towel and reshape to let dry. Don’t hang it up on a line or a hanger because it’s gonna stretch.”
