What to wear on a weekend trip
to a seaside spot like Kennebunkport
With the Fourth of July madness quickly approaching and a heat wave sweeping across America, it's the perfect time to take a quick trip for some well deserved R&R. Kennebunkport, Maine is an ideal destination—the charming seaside town has everything you could want for an Atlantic ocean getaway, with none of the hassle of Cape Cod. Speckled with beautiful cottages and beach houses for rent, there's a spawning boardwalk, vibrant downtown and a forest-meets-ocean vibe that just can't be beat. Lobster and blueberries are among local delicacies, and the water, while chilly, is perfectly swimmable and a pleasant contrast to the balmy beaches.
A trip to any coastal location demands that you lean into the half nautical, half preppy origins of the area for a couple of days, whether it's relaxing on the beach, flexing the cerebral muscle or curling up with a great book on a gingham couch. Physical exercise is optional, with bonus points for playing a sport that requires a racquet or, at least, a polo. Do like the locals and embrace everything that comes with owning a boat. However, preppy doesn't have to mean stuffy. Patterns and colors are your friends, while mixing and matching is fully encouraged. Comfortable shoes that can handle sand are the first thing that should go into your weekender, followed quickly by your favorite swim trunks. Don't forget a sweater or rugby that can be pulled over a lightweight button-down, as the ocean breeze makes chilly nights a regular occurrence.

When in Maine ...
Despite its size, Maine is incredibly accessible. For a quick day trip, try the half-hour drive to Portland, ME, an equally picturesque but much larger town. It’s a foodie’s paradise, with everything from fresh-from-the-boat seafood to some renowned and historic ice cream. If you have more time on your hands, Acadia National Park is only a few hours away. The park boasts incredible hiking camping and wildlife that puts your local trails to shame—just watch out for ticks.
