Great Workout Gear at Any Price
The best gear to wear and use in your new home gym
“During these unprecedented times, now more than ever, we are alone together.” These phrases, or some ad-slogan combination, have become the rallying cry since mid-March when our lives turned into an episode of Black Mirror. At the very least, our daily rituals have become disrupted, forcing our homes to become makeshift schools, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms. If that's the most you've been impacted, consider yourself lucky.
For the Type-A health nut, 6 a.m. spin classes are out of the question and after-work boot camps flooded with mood lighting and blaring music might still be a few months off. States are adhering to their own guidelines, and we all have our own opinions on how quickly we want to jump back into a crowded space with sweaty strangers and shared equipment.
If there's one silver lining, it may be that we're living in the golden age of home workouts: companies like Peleton and Mirror bring bespoke classes to the comfort of your home (if you've got the cash). Or, for the more tech-savvy and budget-conscious, all it takes is an internet connection and a little floor space. Instagram, Youtube and countless free trials have become our sweat-inducing savior. Just ask photographer and travel blogger John Philp Thompson, who's been combining simple at-home equipment with live-streamed training sessions.
But before you fire up the 20-minute core blaster on Chromecast or spend your lunch break doing pushups, you'll want to make sure you make the most of your time. That means being prepared and being comfortable. So why not treat yourself to a few things that will inspire you to stay motivated, and feeling good while transforming your living room into an effective private health club? Plus, without wandering eyes in the gym to question your form (“Do I look as dumb as I feel right now?”) it's a great time to try something new—especially during “these unprecedented times.”
