My Morning Routine

Fragrance Developer
Waking up with the fragrance developer and founder of ARQUISTE
Carlos Huber knows how to create worlds—both big and small. The Mexican-born creative studied architecture before getting a degree from Columbia in Historic Preservation. His innate talent and good taste landed him a job at Ralph Lauren, where he designed the beautifully-layered shops the brand is known for. But while working in luxury fashion, he developed a love for fragrance and how you can conger memories and feelings with just a few whiffs of an amazing scent. As a fragrance developer, he's the man brands come to when they want to capture their essence in a bespoke scent. He's worked on brands like Cire Trudon, helped distill the St. Regis hotel into a signature candle, and is the reason why Vacation's products evoke such fond memories of our youth with their retro tropical aromas.
Of course, when he's not hired out to other brands, he's working on his own line of fragrances, ARQUISTE. The meticulously researched colognes are crafted with the rarest ingredients and are made to be rich, transportive and layered. Which is to say, Huber is a busy guy, but is well-liked in the industry and beyond. We caught up with him recently to see how he starts his day and what he smells like—which, at the moment, is a mix of clary sage, warm white pepper and leather.
The Series
Those moments between turning off the alarm and getting into our work routine can be the most defining 60 minutes of our day. Benjamin Franklin set a day's worth of plans by 5 am and Steve Jobs asked a simple question: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" Our rituals are a reflection of us. So we've ventured out to discover how some of our most influential and fruitful peers get started.
My Routine
I’m definitely a morning person.
Though, I admit, I'm a little slow in the morning. Funnily enough, when I'm on holiday or working out of town I find it easier to wake up early and head out fairly quickly for a morning run. What's that about?
I do prioritize my sleep.
I try to get a good seven to eight hours of sleep each night. You can tell a difference when you do. But, usually, I'm waking up around 7:30 am.
I don’t know if it’s good or not, but I use my phone as my alarm.
It's convenient and always with me. But I never hit snooze. When the alarm goes off, I'm up.
My nightstand is pretty orderly.
I've got a book to read on nights when I'm not too sleepy (currently, The Stones of Venice by John Ruskin), a tray with my watch, a picture of my partner Andrew and my phone.
You can’t start your day with an unmade bed.
Honestly, making the bed is the first thing I do every morning.
The first app I fire up ...
It's usually WhatsApp, to check if any messages came in overnight.

The first person I talk to ...
Our little sausage dog Chorizo ... I guess you could say I do my daily affirmations with him. Then I start brewing some coffee and take Chorizo for a walk and feed him.
My time with Chorizo is probably the most important part of my morning.
It brings a little bit of joy to every day.
My coffee routine is simple.
My go-to at home is just drip coffee with skim milk. When out, I'll get macchiatos or Americanos instead.
Having a little quiet time for my cup of coffee is key.
I go over my emails—it's important to me to get them answered first thing. Then I make note of the to-do's to organize my day. I'll do a little warm-up exercise at home to get the blood flowing before heading out to the gym.
I’m not much of a breakfast guy.
I don't usually have breakfast during the week. I'm not usually that hungry early. I try to have an early lunch around 12 pm instead.
But I like getting in some fitness before the day officially starts.
I try to workout in the morning, unless I have a lot of emails and I'm stuck working on them. Then, I have to plan to go to the gym later.

My grooming routine is pretty straightforward.
I shower after my workout, and trim my beard and head once a week. I make sure to wear face moisturizer every day—hydration is key.
But I wear a fragrance (or two) every day.
I've always got scent samples I'm testing. I need to wear them on the body, so I'm always wearing whatever I'm working on for ARQUISTE, but Peau is my usual go-to daily scent.
When it comes to getting dressed, I don’t sweat it.
I check the weather, my calendar and then pick out what I'll wear after my shower and just go with it.

Fragrance, of course. But in all actuality ... my headphones. I love Apple’s AirPod Pros, and I use them multiple times a day.
