What happens when a designer known for his laid back, easy clothes collaborates with a bike shop known for its hip vintage aesthetic? You get Steven Alan's flannel shirt jackets co-designed by Chari & Co., the Lower East Side store that specializes in old school Japanese track bikes. But this wasn't one of those wham-bam-slap-a-label-on-it collaborations. Alan, whose plaid shirts are already de rigueur for the fixed gear set, wanted the shirt to be functional without feeling like a piece from Patagonia. That's where the minds at Chari stepped in—lengthening the back of the shirt to cycle-friendly proportions while adding a zippered hunting pouch and relocating the chest pocket. That way, it doesn't interfere with your messenger bag.
