The Need for Tweed

Tweed? In the summer? We know what you're thinking. But this weekend, the tweed run is coming home. What started in London back in 2009 as essentially a flash mob of well-dressed men on bikes has grown into herringbone-swaddled rides in nearly two dozen cities around the globe from Durango, Colorado to Tokyo, Japan. On Sunday, in Glasgow, Scotland the first official Tweed Ride by Harris Tweed—who's been making the fabric for centuries—gets underway. Should you want to get in the spirit, there is a handful of pre-fall pieces in stores now. From J.Crew's tailored sport coat and some slim ties by Sson to tweedy takes on the classic ball cap and desert boots to a pair of natty slippers made by British cobblers Bowill & Elliot for Rugby.

From left: Ludlow sport coat, $298 by J.Crew; Green Irish tweed cologne, $285 by Creed; Tweed baseball cap, $29 by Orvis; Harris Tweed desert boots, $153 by Clarks; Harris Tweed ties, $90 by Sson; Bowhill & Elliot slippers, $548 by Rugby
