Top Gun Style
The 1986 classic is getting a sequel next year. But there's plenty of current style to swipe from the original.
Come for the legendary rivalry, stay for the retro athletic style.
The long-awaited tennis drama Borg vs. McEnroe opens today. For the uninitiated, the film details one of the sport's most legendary rivalries. It's Wimbledon, 1980, and Swedish champion Björn Borg (played by Sverrir Gudnason) is vying for a record-breaking fifth Wimbledon title against the notoriously hotheaded American newcomer John McEnroe (played by Shia LaBeouf). Come for the competition—and mind games between two perfectionists who are more alike than they initially appear—but stay for the retro style. After all, tennis style has been a source of inspiration for designers for decades. And while the film faithfully replicates the iconic on-court attire down to the headbands, don't sleep on the guys' off-court style. Both showcase some of the era's signature swagger, from color blocking and bold jewelry to the track jackets and chunky sneakers that are all coming back into fashion.
