In just eight quick months, Los Angeles-based blogger Nick Maggio has gained a following from his daily trinkets of style and inspiration that range from "American as apple pie" to "bad-ass as Harcore-punk rock." A Time to Get, or ATG to those in the know, specializes in clever, original posts which often elicit thoughts of "why didn't we think of that?" So we took some time to get personal with Maggio, see what he was up to and where he's going.
What was your inspiration for starting the site?
Pure selfishness. I used to have a job that required my ability to not only stay on top of trends in men's style and pop culture, but understand it as well. After I quit to pursue other avenues, I couldn't help but feel I was falling out of touch. I started ATG as merely a way to force myself to sit and research what's out there. Magazines, stores, internet, if even for an hour or so a day. Basically, to sum it up, I'm getting older and I wanted to feel like I could still be cool. Well, at least talk about cool things.
There's definitely a love for the classics, but ATG covers a wide range. Is there a method to your posts?
Yeah, things I like or things that strike me as being inspirational. That's about it. It's a collective sum of my life, a visual autobiography in a way. I always get so amped to see there are so many people out there that have the same weird and random interests as me.
Describe your personal style.
I'm pretty simple. You'd be hard-pressed to find me in something other than Vans Authentics, Hanes white tee, APC jeans and a Steven Alan woven. Other than that, I stay pretty loyal to brands. I don't wear Sebago, I wear Sperry, Persols, not Ray-Bans and I've only carried Il Bisonte wallets for the last 8 years. Besides personal taste for day to day, I applaud and support anyone making a product they believe in and are proud of.
You seem to have a great allegiance to Los Angeles and its history. What you love about the West Coast?
I moved to the West Coast when I was three from Louisiana. It's all I know, really. I've had the privilege of being able to travel around the world and see all corners of the States, but when it comes down to it, California just feels like home. From the laid back attitude, the film industry, the weather, the style, the coast to the cars ... it just has everything I love.
Tell us something random about yourself and ATG?
Myself: I love California, the beach, the culture and the fact that it was the birthplace of a couple modern board-sports. That being said, I have ZERO desire to ever be on a surfboard. How uncool am I?
ATG: I outsource the blog to India. They do a great job and have competitive prices.
Plans for the future?
Today? Going to Venice. Nothing like the beach in the middle of the day while everyone else works. Next week? Going to NYC and the Hamptons. That makes me sound rich, doesn't it? Ahhh, "act as if", my friends. Act as if. In general? You always hear advice like, "figure out what you love, then do that for the rest of your life." I guess I'm looking forward to the rest of my life.
