The Jacket

The Lightweight Parka

FYI

The fishtail parka was first used by the US Army in 1951 to help protect soldiers from the elements in the Korean War.

Though its heavier cousins go by such monikers as the snorkel jacket or anorak, the simply named parka is the perfect lightweight layer for autumn. One of the more popular models is Sierra Designs' 60/40 parka, named for its 60% cotton and 40% polyester blend. Introduced in the 60's, it made its big screen debut on Robert De Niro's body in 1978's "The Deer Hunter." For fall, Apolis partnered with Sierra Designs for their own take on the classic jacket, crafted entirely at the brand's Mount Everest factory in Oakland, California. But whether it's a 60/40 style jacket, a military fishtail design like Band of Outsiders or a waxed cotton version like Woolrich Woolen Mills, the parka is a versatile piece that looks as good with an oxford and tie as it does layered over a solid tee and a cardigan. A few things to consider before you pull the trigger: flannel lining, a durable drawstring hood and a decent amount of water resistance.
